Common Dealership Vocabulary and Terminology
Before you visit the dealership to shop for your next vehicle, it is a good idea to become familiar with some of the phrases and terminology that you're likely to hear while you are there.
Auto History Report
A detailed account of a vehicle's history, including major repairs, water damage, accidents, etc. It is generally a good idea to check a used vehicle’s history report before buying.

Clear Title
A title that has no outside interest in it; only one person owns that vehicle. This means there are no liens (as with a financed vehicle) of any sort.

Demo
This refers to test driving a new or used vehicle.

Extended Warranty
A sort of insurance policy that protects a vehicle owner by paying for repairs caused by mechanical failure and break-downs. Most new vehicles come with warranties.

F&I
This refers to the Finance & Insurance office where documents are filled out and signed. Once you decide to buy a particular vehicle, you will likely visit the F&I office.

GM
General Manager: The GM is the boss at the dealership. He is in charge of the salespeople and day-to-day business.
Inspection
Refers to safety or emissions testing on a vehicle. Some states require a vehicle’s “road worthiness” to be inspected every year or two.

Lease
An alternative to buying, with a lease you make a monthly payment (that is generally smaller than if you purchased) and you get a vehicle for a pre-determined amount of time and then give it back after the term. Could be considered a long-term rental arrangement.

Market Value
The average of prices being asked for a vehicle by dealers and private sellers.

Repossession
When somebody finances or leases a vehicle and then does not make his payments, the bank will have the vehicle taken back, or repossessed.

Retail Value
The asking price for a vehicle that you can expect to see at a dealership.

Trade-In Value
The price you can expect to receive for your old vehicle at a dealership.
